Meet The Stone Cold Blues Band…
Brett Wellman & the Stone Cold Blues Band are thrilling audiences whenever they take the stage! Born from the influences of Chicago blues greats Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Little Milton to the Mississippi Delta of Robert Johnson, Ledbelly, and Honey Boy Edwards their sound covers 100 years of down and dirty American blues. The band’s performances have been called “engrossing” and “high energy”, especially when the harmonica player walks through the crowd while playing one of his signature solos. With Brett Wellman on guitar & vocals, “Jazz” Sherman on drums, “Dangerous Dave” Messler on bass & vocals and Chris Balding on harmonica and vocals, this band is a guarantee for providing a great show and an evening of fun music!
Brett Wellman (Guitar, Vocals): At the age of 5, Brett began learning violin using the Suzuki method. By age 11, he had already done a two-week tour through Western Europe (this was before the fall of the Iron Curtain!). By his late teens, Brett took up the guitar and developed a deep interest in the Blues having discovered the likes of Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters, via bands like Led Zeppelin, Savoy Brown and Hot Tuna.
In 2006, he was chosen to be a part of an incredible project funded by Public Radio International (PRI), composing and recording the soundtrack for a radio documentary on the life and times of Zora Neale Hurston. The show aired countless times in 2007 and an educational CD was compiled for high school age children around the world, with over 25 million copies distributed! Brett is a uniquely talented Blues guitarist and classical violinist, loving life as a musician and music instructor in Tallahassee, Florida.
Chris Balding (Harmonica, Vocals): In 1991, Chris went to a local watering hole to catch a gig featuring harmonica master Jerry Portnoy, a veteran of Muddy Waters’ band. “That show changed my life” he later recounted. Chris has been obsessed with the harmonica ever since. After 20+ years as a musical orphan, sitting in with countless bands and playing all of the popular local music spots, he has finally found a home with Brett Wellman and The Stone Cold Blues Band. “I’m playing the music that I love with musicians who appreciate it in the same way that I do. It just doesn’t get any better than that.”
James "Jas" Sherman
James “Jas” Sherman (Drums, Percussion, Vocals): Jas has played with many of Tallahassee’s top bands. He once made up the rhythm section of Night Breeze, with fellow Stone Cold Blues member Dave Messler. Jas’ high-energy, precision playing and superb showmanship provide the rock-solid foundation on which the Stone Cold Blues Band builds their shows.
“Dangerous” Dave Messler
“Dangerous” Dave Messler (Bass, Vocals): Over the last 20 years, Dave has played in dozens of bands, covering many genres of music, and performing all manners of venues; from nightclubs to concerts. Some of these bands have opened shows for national artists including the Steve Miller Band, Dave Mason, Traffic, Tower of Power, and Buddy Guy. Dave is a multi-threat musician, playing electric bass, upright bass, guitar, a bit of keyboards, singing, and even finding time to do some recording as well.
